Democratic Candidate Meg Loughran Cappel won the election for the District 107 Senate seat, defeating Republican opponent Thomas McCullagh.
Cappel expressed her gratitude to voters for their support through social media.
“I am proud to have run a values-driven campaign focused on the issues most important to working families like mine: equity in public education, access to quality, affordable healthcare, and the rights of our workforce,” shel wrote.
Cappel added that she is hopeful for the future and looks forward to being an effective voice for her district.
“No matter what the future holds after tonight, communities like those in the 49th give me faith in what lies ahead for the American people. I have given my life to this community, and I look forward to fighting for them and representing them in Springfield,” she wrote.
