CITY OF ELMHURST: Telephone Fraud Alert – Elmhurst

Ward

City of Elmhurst issued the following announcement on Oct. 5.

The Elmhurst Police Department has received several reports of an attempted fraud scheme where a caller poses as a police officer or detective, and tells the person answering the phone that there is a warrant for their arrest due to missing a court appearance.

The victim is instructed to purchase a money pack or gift card at a local retail establishment to resolve the warrant. The caller ID has been spoofed to make it look like the call is coming from the Elmhurst Police Department.

If you receive a call of this nature please hang up and notify 9-1-1. Do not purchase any gift cards, money pack, or other such financial instruments. If you ever have any questions about the identity of a police officer, ask to have a uniformed police officer in a marked squad car respond in person.
