Naperville Fire Department issued the following announcement on June 15.
At 5:54 p.m. on Friday, June 12, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a phone call for a structure fire at a two-story row of townhouses located in the 500 block of Burning Tree Lane. Naperville 911(PSAP) dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel, including an Incident Commander and Incident Safety Officer, to the reported address.
At 5:59 p.m. Squad 9 arrived on scene and identified heavy black smoke coming from an exterior stairwell leading to the basement of one of the townhouse units. The crew of Squad 9 and supporting suppression units began an aggressive interior fire attack by advancing hose lines to the basement of the building. Crews encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions in the basement, and advance to the seat of the fire was deliberate and arduous. At 6:09 p.m. the response to the fire was upgraded from a general alarm to a box alarm, which brought additional suppression units to the scene and to Naperville fire stations for coverage. A coordinated fire attack and sound tactics by on-scene crews brought the fire under control within 45 minutes of NFD arrival. Overhaul and ventilation were conducted to expose any areas of high heat and remove smoke from the building.
The fire was contained to the unit of origin, with fire damage located to the basement and first floor of the unit. Minor smoke had to be cleared from adjacent units, but no damage occurred to any unit other than the fire unit. Of the seven apartments located in the complex, all were deemed habitable except for the unit the fire originated in, which was deemed uninhabitable by the Naperville TED department inspector. At the time of the fire, four occupants were home and evacuated the building prior to the arrival of fire department personnel. There was also one pet bird that was brought out of the home by the occupants.
The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department; The Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Team (TED); Naperville Fire Department Fire
Investigators; NICOR; The Warrenville Fire Protection District; Downers Grove Fire Department; and MABAS 16 IMAT Team. Station Coverage was provided by the Wheaton Fire Department, Lockport Fire Protection District, the Westmont Fire Department, the Oswego Fire Protection District, and the Plainfield Fire Protection District. The fire is being investigated by the Naperville fire investigation team. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters while operating on scene.
