Illinois State House District 48 issued the following announcement on May 1.

As Illinois’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues into its second month, state Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is reminding residents that a number of affordable, accessible mental health resources are available to help them deal with this unprecedented disaster.

“The stress of staying at home and worrying about economic losses, combined with anxiety about this potentially deadly illness – it’s taking an emotional toll on all of us,” Costa Howard said. “Even though we know that we are playing a vital role in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home and complying with all social distancing recommendations, it still can be challenging to maintain our mental health. So anyone who is struggling should know that there is help available.”

The Mental Health Division of the State of Illinois’ Department of Human Services has launched “Call 4 Calm” for people who want to talk to a mental health professional. Residents can text “Talk” to 552020 to connect with a counselor at a local community mental health center.

People who have concerns over substance abuse related to the COVID-19 outbreak can contact the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Disaster Distress Hotline by calling 1-800-985-5990 or texting TalkWithUs to 66746.

“During these difficult times, we need to do everything we can to protect both our physical health and our mental health,” Costa Howard said. “All of these resources are confidential and free of charge, so I encourage you to reach out if you feel overwhelmed or need some additional emotional support.”
