Illinois State House District 41 issued the following announcement on July 17.
Throughout his tenure in Springfield, State Representative Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville) has always been a vocal opponent to the tax increases that have made Illinois a less desirable place to live and work. This week he was chosen to serve on a newly-created Property Tax Relief Task Force. The members of the bipartisan and bicameral task force will study the property tax burden across Illinois and propose solutions to achieve meaningful and sustainable property tax relief for property owners.
“Without a doubt, the issue I hear most about from the people I represent is the crushing property tax burden and how it negatively impacts their families and businesses,” said Wehrli. “As people and businesses flee our state for better opportunities elsewhere, a common comment as they exit Illinois is that they could no longer shoulder the tax burden.”
The task force, which will include members appointed by the Governor and the majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate, will examine the root causes of high property taxes in communities across the state and study best practices utilized in lower property tax states. Together, the group will propose solutions, including policy changes that will result in real property tax relief for Illinoisans.
“Our work on this panel begins immediately and I look forward to taking a deep dive into this incredibly important issue,” Wehrli said. “We must find a reasonable solution that allows for proper funding of local services traditional funded through property taxes in a manner that does not put people at risk of losing their homes. It’s very serious work and I can’t wait to get started.”
Upon the conclusion of their work, members of the task force will submit a final report- including both short and long-term solutions, to the Governor and General Assembly by the end of this year.
