The Downers Grove Public Library has announced "storytime" and craft-making events in June that will teach the virtues of homosexuality to children aged 2-6 in the suburb.

The May/June 2024 edition of the library's "Discoveries" newsletter, mailed to all village taxpayers, is promoting the events.

"Stop by to make a rainbow craft celebrating Pride Month. Preschoolers must be directly supervised by an adult. Available to the first 100 crafters," a description of the event, scheduled for Friday June 7, reads.

A week later, the library is inviting Downers Grove toddlers, pre-schoolers and kindergarteners back, to be read books and sing songs praising homosexuality.

"Join us for a librarian-led family storytime filled with picture books, stories, and songs that celebrate Pride Month," the promotion for "Pride Storytime" says.

It will be hosted in the Kids Program Room, scheduled for Friday, June 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Last June, the Downers Grove Public Library stood up a "wall of fame" featuring notable homosexuals from history.

The Downers Grove Public Library Board includes five members: Swapna Gigani, Carissa Dougherty, David Humphreys, Barnali Khuntia and Marti Sladek.

A sixth member, Bill Nienburg, was removed from the board on April 16 after he opposed a "drag queen bingo" event for children at the library, which was to feature a male cross-dressing stripper. The event was cancelled due to public outcry.

In 1999, President Bill Clinton declared June "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month," ordering a month-long recognition of gay men and lesbian women in the U.S.

In 2009, President Barack Obama changed the name to "LGBT Pride Month, expanding the recognition to include bisexuals-- men or women who like both men and/or women-- and so-called "trans-sexuals," or cross-dressing men and women, who prefer to wear clothes of the opposite sex.

In 2021, President Joe Biden changed the name to "LGBTQ Pride Month," expanding the celebration to people who call themselves "queer."
