Naperville Fire Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 10.
At 3:13 PM on Sunday, February 10, 2019 Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a resident reporting a fire inside the oven. PSAP immediately dispatched a full still for the appliance fire with an upgrade to a general alarm after additional information determined the kitchen was on fire. The general alarm included a total of 3 engines,1 heavy rescue squad, 2 ladder trucks, 2 ambulances, 1 incident commander, 1 safety officer and 2 rescue vehicles to the scene (26 Personnel).
Squad 8 arrived on the scene within 5 minutes of the initial call, identified a multi-family apartment complex with smoke showing from the second floor. Incident command was established by squad 8 while crews deployed a fire hose to the second floor and searched for any occupants of the fire unit. Interior attack crews extinguished visible fire in the kitchen of the unit and continued to overhaul the area searching for additional fire. Fire department shift commanders arrived on the scene, assumed command and designated a safety officer. The fire was deemed under control within 10 minutes with additional time to clear smoke from the stairwells. Crews assisted with establishing a water supply, removing smoke by ventilating and moving occupants of unaffected units to safety. Salvage and overhaul activities were conducted to limit further damage to property and contents of the apartment complex.
Additional assistance was provided by The Naperville Police Department, Naperville Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) Team and The American Red Cross. The involved unit was declared uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage and 2 occupants were assisted by the American Red Cross and property management with immediate relocation needs.
Naperville fire station coverage was provided by the Westmont and Bolingbrook Fire Departments.
There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and cooking related.
