Downers Grove Park District issued the following announcement on Jan. 9.
Spend Martin Luther King Junior Day giving back to nature.
On the third Monday in January, people across the United States use Dr. Martin Luther King Day as a way to honor his legacy by giving back to the communities they call home.
We are proud to carry on this tradition at Lyman woods by offering a day of service on January 21st between 10 am to 2 pm. Activities will include habitat restoration, seed sorting and cleaning, trail and nature center improvements. Both indoor and outdoor work will be available.
We will have coffee and snacks, and end the day with campfire and hot coco. There is no set schedule. Families, individuals, or groups are free begin and end their time volunteering when they choose. Anyone under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent.
All volunteers are required to bring a signed waiver with them to the day the event. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed and filled out by their parent or legal guardian. Waivers will be available in person on the day of the event.
Upcoming Volunteer Workdays
Join our REAP (Restore, Educate, and Preserve) volunteer group for additional volunteer work days this season. Help restore our natural areas through a variety of activities including: collecting and sowing native seed, repairing trails, removing invasive brush and planting native plants.
