CITY OF NAPERVILLE: Mayor Chirico Revokes Liquor License for Mexican Grille Restaurant

Local gov stock 01

City of Naperville issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

Serving in his role as Naperville’s Liquor Commissioner, Mayor Steve Chirico has signed an order revoking the Naperville liquor license for Mexican Grille restaurant located at 1550 N. Route 59 for serving liquor without a state liquor license and for refilling of original liquor packages.

Mexican Grille has had several violations within the past few years, including the aforementioned violations in June 2018 that led to the license revocation.

In 2016, a $500 fine and three-day suspension of the facility’s liquor license was ordered for allowing patrons to re-enter less than one hour before closing in violation of 3-3-17:1.3 of the Naperville Municipal Code. In 2017, a fine of $3,000 and a reduction of the facility’s late-night permit by one hour from August 29, 2017, through December 31, 2017, was enacted; as well as a nine month suspension of its entertainment permit from January 1, 2018 through September 30, 2018; costs for hearing preparation; and a 10-day suspension of its liquor license for four employees being unable to present a valid Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (B.A.S.S.E.T.) card in January 2017, all violations of 3-3-8:4.2 of the Naperville Municipal Code.

“I take my responsibility as Liquor Commissioner very seriously and believe that it is important to have fair and consistent enforcement for our businesses and license holders,” said Mayor Steve Chirico. “Over the past several years, I think the Liquor Commission has done an excellent job setting the expectations for our business and restaurant owners. Mexican Grille had numerous violations and yet continued to ignore the rules, and as a result, placed residents and guests at risk.”

The owner of Mexican Grille entered into a stipulation with the City waiving the rights to a hearing, admitting to the violations and agreeing to the revocation of Mexican Grille’s liquor license. The agreement forfeits the owner and any other principals of Mexican Grille from applying or holding a Naperville liquor license. On September 6, Mayor Chirico signed an order revoking the license.
