Rep. Mike Fortner (R-West Chicago) will end his 12-year career in the House at the conclusion of his current term in January 2019, according to his website.

“Life is lived in cycles," Fortner posted. "There are cycles due to changes in our personal lives and those of our families. Elected officials are not immune to these cycles…It has been my honor to serve the public at both the state and local level, but after many months of reflection I have decided that it is time for this cycle to end, and I will not run for reelection in 2018.”

According to the release, Fortner will have represented the 49th district for six years and the 95th district for six years before that. He also served for 12 years in the West Chicago local government, as an alderman and mayor.

Fortner highlighted several accomplishments from his time in office, including improvements to electric power and electric recycling, as well more privacy protections and easier voter registration.

“As a state representative I have been privileged to use my experience in local government, science and technology to help the people of Illinois,” Fortner posted. “…Twelve years ago a door opened for me when my predecessor decided to seek another position. With this announcement I can open a door to a successor, who I hope will enjoy the same support and success I have in public office.”
