Early risers enjoyed a 7 a.m. breakfast event Friday, Jan. 27 at Gaslite Manor, in Aurora, featuring the theme 'Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow' and sponsored by the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board (AHHAB).
With the planned goal of gathering hundreds to celebrate Aurora’s Hispanic community, the annual event honored many students and several local leaders with special awards.
AHHAB offered kudos to several outstanding local constituents in the form of the Pete Perez Award for leadership; the Delia Nila Basile Award for community service; and the Maria S. Merced Award for exemplary educators.
Winners of this year’s three AHHAB honors included the Perez family; Maria Lozano, director of English language learners for West Aurora School District 129; and Alfredo Bizzocchi, first grade dual language teacher at Boulder Hill Elementary School in School District 308.
Many students were acknowledged for their efforts, as well, from kindergarten on up, with announcements of coloring, poster and essay contest award winners for grades K-8; youth leadership winners for grades 9-11; and college scholarships for 18 senior high school students.
