U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued a statement on Thursday after learning Area Disposal has abandoned plans to locate an industrial waste facility at the Clinton Landfill in Clinton, Illinois, and to dispose of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) above the Mahomet Aquifer.
The Environmental Protection Agency designated the Mahomet Aquifer as a sole-source aquifer in March, entitling it to special protection.
“I was encouraged last month when the EPA gave special protection to a portion of the Mahomet Aquifer – a primary source of drinking water for more than half the population of Central Illinois," Durbin said. "I am relieved today by the news that plans to locate a PCB disposal site above the aquifer have been dropped. Protecting this vital water source took a coordinated effort by members of the community. I applaud them for their efforts and was happy to lend my support.”
Back in 2008, Durbin and then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) wrote to the EPA, indicating their concerns about the proposed industrial waste facility at the Clinton landfill, along with the disposal of PCBs above the Mahomet Aquifer.
