State. Rep. Kathleen Willis (R-77th) said Wednesday she is joining Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and House colleagues in sponsoring legislation to strengthen security requirements for websites and other storers of personal financial information.
“I am proud to support this legislation because as technology advances, we need to make sure consumers’ personal information is protected against hackers and other criminals,” Willis said. “This legislation is a good step to make sure that tougher measures are in place to help protect our citizens.”
The proposed legislation requires any company that collects data and experiences a breach of security to contact the attorney general’s office as soon as possible. The bill also requires data collectors to maintain stronger security measures to ensure that personal information is better protected against hackers. The proposed law would also require operators of a website that collects personal information online to post their privacy policy for consumers before submitting personal information.
“As we hear more and more stories of major retailers experiencing data breaches where millions of people’s financial information is stolen, it is vital that we are being proactive in protecting our financial security,” Willis said. “I’m proud to be working on this legislation with the attorney general's office because consumers deserve to know that action is being taken to keep their personal and financial information secure.”
