Illinois Planned Parenthood spends $600K to oust taxpayer-funded abortion opponents from state legislature
The political arm of Illinois’ largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, has already spent nearly $600,000 this year across 24 competitive state House and Senate races, according to filings with the Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE).
In all 24 races, Planned Parenthood is supporting Democrats over Republicans through Personal PAC, its political action committee.
Top Planned Parenthood targets include state Reps. Peter Breen (R-Glen Ellyn), Tom Morrison (R-Palatine), and Christine Winger (R-Itasca); as well as state Sen. Tom Rooney (R-Rolling Meadows).
The group has spent some $130,000 against Breen, an outspoken opponent of a new state law that enables Illinois Planned Parenthood to receive state tax dollars.
The law, signed in 2017, requires state taxpayers to pay for abortions for state employees and Medicaid recipients. Critics argue the law incentivizes out-of-staters to come to Illinois for free, Illinois taxpayer-funded abortions.
In January, in response to the law, Planned Parenthood opened a new abortion clinic in south suburban Flossmoor, near the Indiana border. A second new abortion clinic opened in Skokie this year as well.
In contrast, in 2014 Personal PAC spent $517,987 total on 16 House and Senate races, according to ISBE.
