Illinois officials report 4,790 coronavirus deaths, with 107,796 confirmed cases
There have been 107,796 confirmed coronavirus cases in Illinois as of May 23, with 4,790 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Chicago (41,402 cases) and Cook County (29,015 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago's death toll from the virus stands at 1,894, while Cook County recorded 1,352 deaths, according to the IDPH.
Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 722,247, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was 40 to 49, with 19,494 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.
Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 51,214 were male and 54,317 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 2,661, while female deaths stood at 2,122.
Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 2,045 Hispanics, 231 Asians, 2,045 whites, 1,446 African-Americans, and 164 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
