Awake Illinois announced on March 22 its support for Laura Hois, a candidate for Illinois House District 81, while referencing the sponsorship of legislation to serialize handgun ammunition by Stava.

The announcement comes as the organization continues to track and respond to legislative proposals affecting firearm regulations in the state. Awake Illinois used its social media platform to highlight both its opposition to previous measures from the same lawmaker and its endorsement of Hois in the upcoming district race. The social media post from Awake Illinois referenced the sponsorship of the current handgun ammunition serialization bill and recalled the group’s previous efforts to block an earlier proposal from the same lawmaker. The organization described its successful offensive strategy against the prior measure and identified the lawmaker as the sponsor of the ammo bill in the latest update. This background illustrates the group’s continued involvement in tracking and responding to specific legislative proposals in the state. The post served as a platform to rally support for a candidate in the relevant district race, according to Awake Illinois on X.

Illinois State Police data indicate more than 2.4 million active firearm owner identification card holders statewide, indicating the scale of licensed firearm ownership and the potential reach of any new measures. The proposed bill would require serialization for all handgun ammunition manufactured, imported, sold, or possessed in Illinois beginning January 1, 2027, along with a centralized registry, according to Illinois State Police statistics.

The Illinois General Assembly bill status page reports that HB4414, sponsored by Stava, would mandate serialization of every round of handgun ammunition with penalties for violations, including class A misdemeanors for manufacture or transfer and class C misdemeanors for possession in public places. No other states have enacted comparable requirements for individual serialization of handgun ammunition, according to available legislative analyses. The measure also authorizes end-user fees of up to five cents per round to fund the program infrastructure and operations. The bill would establish a statewide transaction registry managed by the Illinois State Police covering ammunition activities, according to information from the General Assembly.

Awake Illinois operates as a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization dedicated to empowering individuals and educating communities on issues that affect quality of life. The group maintains its headquarters in Naperville and focuses on advocacy efforts at local, state, and community levels to promote civic engagement among residents.
