Naperville Police launch Fourth of July crackdown on impaired and unbuckled drivers
Naperville, Ill. — June 24, the Naperville Police Department announced the start of an Independence Day traffic enforcement campaign, running through July 6, aimed at targeting impaired drivers and seat belt law violators.
"We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely," said Naperville Police Sgt. Eric Muska. "It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use drugs. Our officers will be out in full force to keep impaired drivers off the road. This Fourth of July, designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive under the influence."
The department will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments in a statewide effort to increase enforcement during the holiday period. Muska outlined several safety tips, including giving keys to a designated driver before going out, using taxis, mass transit, ride-sharing services, or calling a sober friend or family member if impaired. He also encouraged the public to report drunk drivers by pulling over and dialing 911, and reminded everyone to wear seat belts, stating, "Not only is it the law, but it’s also your best defense against an impaired driver."
The Illinois Independence Day enforcement campaign is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and is supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies. The campaign is reinforced by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s "It’s Not a Game" media campaign, which shares real stories of Illinois residents lost in fatal crashes.
Traffic violations in Illinois can carry significant penalties. Petty offenses, such as stop sign violations or red light infractions, can result in fines up to $1,000, while more serious offenses like driving under the influence may lead to jail time and higher fines, according to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.
