More than 67,000 residents in DuPage County may be affected by the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding, which is set to begin on November 1 due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. The halt in SNAP support is expected to impact 42 million Americans nationwide.

County Board Chair Deborah Conroy stated, “We want DuPage residents to know we have staff standing by 24/7 to help people in need during these uncertain times. People can dial 211 or visit 211DuPage.gov to locate food pantries and programs in their community. In addition to directing residents to food pantries, 211 staff can also help residents who need assistance paying rent or their energy bills. Those wishing to donate or volunteer at a food pantry can contact Giving DuPage (www.givingdupage.org) to get connected to a local organization.”

Residents who rely on SNAP are encouraged to seek assistance from local organizations offering food and other basic needs. Among the providers are Loaves & Fishes Community Services, with locations in Naperville and Aurora, which offer various hours for those seeking groceries and support (https://www.loaves-fishes.org/programs/food-assistance/). The People’s Resource Center operates food pantries in Wheaton and Westmont, providing both appointment-based and curbside options for access (https://www.peoplesrc.org/food-pantry/). The West Suburban Community Pantry in Woodridge offers both walk-in and appointment services for individuals needing food supplies (https://wscpantry.org/).

A comprehensive list of food pantries serving DuPage County is available online at www.dupagecounty.gov/food. For further support with food or other essential needs such as clothing or utility payments, residents can call the 211 DuPage helpline at any time or visit 211dupage.gov for additional resources.

The county is also directing those interested in supporting local efforts through donations or volunteering opportunities to Giving DuPage (www.givingdupage.org), which connects volunteers with area organizations.
