At a Capitol press conference on Thursday, State Representative Amy Grant, along with fellow House Republicans David Friess, Dan Ugaste, John Cabello, and Patrick Windhorst, presented a legislative package aimed at enhancing public safety, law enforcement recruitment and retention, and supporting victims of violent crime in Illinois.
The Truth in Public Safety Working group, initiated in 2023, focused on improving public safety in Illinois' major cities, Chicagoland, and the entire state. The legislative package unveiled during the press conference was the result of consultations with various stakeholders, including law enforcement groups, retired judges, and state’s attorneys.
Representative Grant emphasized the urgency of prioritizing public safety, stating, "It is beyond clear that leaders in Illinois need to recommit to public safety in the months ahead." She also highlighted the concerns of residents feeling unsafe in their neighborhoods due to the state's perceived leniency on crime.
Among the key legislative proposals introduced by the House Republicans are measures such as widening the detention net for all felonies, revoking pre-trial release for defendants charged with new offenses, and establishing a timeline for mental health services for individuals found unfit to stand trial.
Rep Grant reiterated her commitment to collaborating with local law enforcement agencies to restore law, order, and public safety in her district and across Illinois. Serving her third term as State Representative in the General Assembly, Grant represents the 47th district encompassing several communities in DuPage County.
The legislative initiatives put forth by the Truth in Public Safety Working group underscore the Republican lawmakers' dedication to addressing public safety concerns and supporting law enforcement efforts in Illinois.
