U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Chicago) says the U.S. Constitution includes a right to “claim asylum” for illegal aliens.

"We need to do everything in our power to protect the constitutional right to seek asylum, period," Ramirez wrote in a May 11 Twitter post.

Ramirez has been vocal about border and immigration policies and the rights of asylum seekers. In a Twitter post, she posted a link to an interview with the Washington Journal where she shared her thoughts on the end of Title 42, which prevented US border agents from turning away asylum seekers during the pandemic under health and safety interests.

In her Twitter post, she commented on the new border security bill that Republicans passed through the House with a narrow vote, saying "This is the kind of bill that's really just about messaging and fearmongering." Her tweet showed her asking people to say “Hell No” to the “Republican war on asylum seekers.”

Ramirez said that she joined with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to "speak directly to our Latine communities about the war Republicans are waging against the constitutional right to seek asylum."

The Hispanic Caucus in the House recently posted on Twitter: “We are ready & willing to negotiate in good faith w/ Republicans, but all they want to do is demonize immigrants and build a useless border wall.”

On May 10, Ramirez also tweeted about the town of Brownsville, Texas, showing a video of the Texas National Guard outfitted in riot gear heading to a major border crossing point, and linking an article about the recent incident in which a Brownsville man crashed into pedestrians at the bus stop across from the overnight migrant shelter.

In the corresponding tweets, she accused Republicans of “sending the National Guard armed with guns and riot gear to the border” and in regards to the deaths of the pedestrians she said “Republicans are doing absolutely nothing to combat deadly, extreme hate that results in horrific tragedies.”
