At its Nov. 3 meeting, the Glendale Heights Village Board discussed adopting an ordinance to place two electric vehicle charging stations in heavily trafficked areas in the village.
The ordinance is intended to help prepare for the increased number of electric vehicles expected in the next few years.
“The sports hub has hundreds of people there on weekends,” Douglas Flint, Village administrator of Glendale Heights, said at the meeting. “We have traffic court here during the day. That brings in hundreds of people here during the day. Having charging stations available for residents and visitors is (important) - electric vehicles are going to be the way of the future, and planning for that process today will get us a little bit ahead of the game when that happens.”
Flint explained that adding the two charging stations would be completely free to the village as it would be funded through various grants. Afterwards, the village would receive 20% of the generated revenue from the stations.
Board members agreed there would be a separate meter to monitor electricity usage and additional lighting above the stations for safety and visibility.
A resident at the meeting requested the village ensure the placement of the charging stations not be located too closely to Veterans Memorial Park in order to preserve the sanctity of the memorial, which was agreed upon by village officials.
