At its Nov. 15 meeting, the Elk Grove Village Board heard from Mayor Craig Johnson who reminded residents of the tree-lighting ceremony in the village on Friday, Nov. 25.
The tree is already up and waiting for the ceremony to start. It will be the 25th year of this village tradition. Santa will also be at the ceremony ready to hear what children in the village want for Christmas.
The mayor also praised the city’s finance crew and residents for making it possible for the village to have a tax reduction this year instead of a tax increase like many neighboring communities. The village was also able to overfund the police and fire pension fund and send out gift cards to residents paid with tax dollars the village didn’t need.
"So we're taking that money, reinvesting it back where belongs," Johnson said. "We got the best policemen, firemen, that's workers in the village. We're taking care of the pensions and we're taking care of the taxpayers by cutting taxes next year by 1.7%. We're proud to do that for them."
The village celebrated its new veterans memorial on Veterans Day. The board was originally planning to have it last Fourth of July, but had to push it back.
