Village Board Approves Investment in Historic Downtown
Paving the Way for Construction to Begin in March
On February 14, 2022, the Village Board approved the necessary contracts to begin construction on the Central Business District Streetscape and Utility Improvements Project. This milestone is the culmination of several years of planning and engagement with village staff, engineers, planners, business owners, residents, and visitors. The project, necessitated by aging infrastructure, will replace and upgrade storm, sanitary, and water lines, build new sidewalks and roads, and install irrigated granite planters with seat walls. The design will maintain the historic look and feel of downtown while meeting ADA accessibility requirements. The new streetscape also provides the opportunity to improve the health of the urban forest by improving growing conditions for trees, increasing the variety of tree species, and doubling the overall number of trees downtown.
The first phase of the project, scheduled for March through November 2022, includes the rehabilitation of Main Street from Hillside Avenue to the Union Pacific West Railroad; Duane Street from Prospect Avenue to Forest Avenue and Hillside Avenue from Glenwood Avenue to east side of Main Street. Construction will be led by A Lamp Concrete Contractors of Schaumburg, Illinois. Bollinger Loch and Associates (BLA) of Itasca, Illinois will serve as the construction engineers on site.
Nicor Gas will begin gas line relocation work on Main Street and Duane Street as early as the week of February 21, 2022. Nicor will communicate directly with affected property owners prior to beginning work.
Two public information meetings will be held to address the project.

Roosevelt Road Hotel Properties Redevelopment
In January, the Village of Glen Ellyn closed on the purchase of two hotel properties located at 675-677 Roosevelt Road and 660 Taft Avenue. The Village plans to undertake a multi-step public engagement process to gather input on the redevelopment of the properties. This process will begin with a Community Open House, to be held on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Links. Residents are invited to attend the Open House to learn more about the property, opportunities for redevelopment based on current market conditions, and to provide input on what they would like to see developed at the site.
The Village will also create a Roosevelt Road/Taft Avenue Hotel Site Ad Hoc Work Group to conduct listening sessions to gather additional public input on the redevelopment of the site. Residents interested in being appointed to the Ad Hoc Work Group, should contact the Village Board via the Village website. Appointments to the Work Group are anticipated to be made at the February 28 Village Board Meeting. More information on these listening sessions will be held will be posted on the Village website and included in future eNews.
