Men's Hoops Stopped by Edgewood

Bendictine University issued the following announcement on Jan. 5

The Benedictine University men's basketball team saw a two-game win streak end in a spirited contest with Edgewood at home.

Edgewood 75, Benedictine 72

THE DETAILS

• After Edgewood scored the first four points of the contest, a majority of the first half was back-and-forth

• Cade Ellingson knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 with 15:41 left in the first half

• Trailing 23-22 at the midway point of the first, Mark Blaszczyk opened a 7-0 run with a free throw as Benedictine led 29-23 following a pair of free throws from Carter Knuckles

• Cullen Cosme connected on a three-pointer and Knuckles added a jumper as Benedictine opened a 34-25 lead with 5:21 to go in the first

• Benedictine moved in front by double digits late in the half and took a 45-36 lead into the break

• Edgewood opened the second half with an 10-0 run to take a 46-45 advantage, holding Benedictine scoreless for the first six minutes of the half

• Benedictine scored just two points in the first 8:31 of the second but found themselves down by just one a 49-48 before Cosme splashed home a jumper and Frank Cunnea made a three

• Benedictine led by seven at 59-52 with 7:42 left before Edgewood 9-1 run to lead 61-60 at the 5:12 mark

• Benedictine split free throws down the stretch including two that could have tied the game while the visitors sank a pair and overcame a late trap to grab the win

THE DETAILS

• Benedictine shot just 34 percent in the second half and finished the game at 42.2 percent while shooting 5-of-23 from beyond he arc, making just one in the second half

• Edgewood held a 41-36 advantage on the glass and finished 14-of-16 at the stripe while Benedictine was 13-for-22 from the line

• The contest featured eight ties and 12 lead changes

• Cosme paced Benedictine with 15 points off the bench, finishing 6-of-7 from the field while adding seven rebounds in just his third collegiate contest

• Ellingson and Knuckles both scored 14 with Knuckles making his first start

• Mason Sobiesk also hit double digits with 10 as the supporting cast stepped up into huge roles

Benedictine (5-6, 4-2 NACC) travels to St. Norbert this weekend.
