Downers Grove South is segregating kids based on race for an upcoming field trip for those who want to be teachers.

A official flier stamped “DGS Student Activities” notes a field trip for those interested in becoming teachers to visit the Thomas Jefferson Junior High School in Woodridge

Only one exception, the field trip is not open to white students.

“Students of Color Field Trip Opportunity,” the poster reads. “Interested in becoming a teacher? This field trip is for YOU!”

The field trip is aimed solely at recruiting minority candidates.

“Students will travel to Jefferson Middle School, observe a teacher and then have a question/answer luncheon and discuss the importance of considering education as a career as a person of color,” the flier reads.

The destination is Woodridge-based Thomas Jefferson Junior High School which serves 680 students.

The school is advocating for students to engage with the college and career center by filling out an application of the trip.

The field trip is planned for 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

The school is not the first modern day school to segregate students based on race.

Adrian W. Harries, now a high-ranking member of the Community Unit School District 300, in his previous position as principal at Nichols Middle School segregated staff meetings based on race.

Community Unit School District 99, which oversees Downers Grove South, has been embroiled in controversy over allowing what some parents are deeming "pornographic" books in the school's library. District 99 Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele's base salary was $195,000 when hired in 2015.
