Rep. Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville) has denounced fellow Democrat Mary Lemanski.

Lemanski, who until recently was the DuPage County Democratic Party social media director, became infamous overnight for a series of tweets blasting Wisconsinites for the Waukesha tragedy in which an SUV barreled into a group of Christmas parade-goers, killing five.

“I’m horrified by the remarks of a fellow local Democrat in the wake of the Waukesha tragedy,”  Stava-Murray told DuPage Policy Journal.

Members from within the Democratic Party have been slow to speak out against Lemanski whose name is now well-known outside of the confines of Downers Grove.

“Hate-filled remarks of wishing death upon others or saying a tragedy was warranted has no place in our society. I condemn fully this instance and any instance of promoting violence,” Stava-Murray said.

Stava-Murray has represented Downers Grove since 2019 where Lemanski was a failed candidate for township clerk. Her district, the 81st, includes parts of Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, Woodridge, Darien, Westmont and Bolingbrook in DuPage and Will counties.

“My thoughts are with the victims of this senseless tragedy and their families who are mourning them or praying for recovery. I’m grateful for the first responders who came to their aid. I’ll continue to pray for the families,” Stava-Murray said.

The series of tweets Lemanski sent out in the wake of the incident targeted the recent acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse.

“Living in Wisconsin, he probably felt threatened,” Lemanski said in one tweet regarding the attack in a nod to Rittenhouse’s acquittal after killing two rioters in Kenosha, Wis. last year.

The driver of an SUV, alleged to be multiple felon Darrell Edwards Brooks, plowed into a group of Christmas parade-goers in Waukesha, Wis. Lemanski tried to link the incident to the acquittal.

“I’m sure he didn’t want to hurt anyone. He came to help people,” Lemanski further stated in reference to Rittenhouse’s reasoning for carrying a weapon on defense of businesses at the riots.
