City of Wheaton Bicycle Advisory Commission Met Feb. 17.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Attendees: Alyse Kondrat, Michelle Dunlap, Rita Nathanson, Bill Nieman, Laurel Salvador, Nancy Allured, Bob Van Valzah 

I. Call to Order 

Alyse Kondrat called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm 

II. Public Comment 

None 

III. Approval of Minutes 

Michelle Dunlap moved to approve the January meeting minutes, Laurel Salvador seconded the motion, unanimous approval 

IV. Chair Report - Alyse Kondrat 

The additional 400 QR code stickers for the Wheaton Bike Route Map have been delivered. 

The City is advertising for additional commission members including the Bicycle Advisory Commission 

V. Ongoing Business 

A. National Bike to School Day - Wednesday, May 5 - Michelle Dunlap will work with Therese Kaufman and Dan Nielson to alert schools about the day and projects that could be incorporated 

B. Safe Routes to School - Bill Nieman discussed a request in the community from a mother wanting safer biking for the children to the Wheaton schools. Bill will continue investigating this idea further with agreement from the Commission members. 

C. History Ride 2021 - Michelle Dunlap will pursue a plan to develop the next History Ride with the Historic Commission with the goal to present a bike tour of mid-century modern homes in Wheaton. In addition, she will encourage the City communications department to promote the Underground Railroad bike tour again this spring as the biking weather improves to get more use of last years’ self-guided tour. 

D. Bike Friendly Community - Bob van Valzah and Laurel Salvador presented information on developing an official Bike Friendly Community. They presented the overview of the criteria, the process and how we should further investigate this option for the City of Wheaton. Their research included evaluating the criteria from the League of American Bicyclists and the Illinois cities that have qualified as Bike Friendly Communities, including Warrenville and Batavia. Commission members agreed this is an important long term goal to pursue and investigate further. Laurel and Bob will spend more time with the lengthy application and propose next steps.
