In a field of nine candidates seeking to fill four open seats on the Indian Prairie District 204 School Board, Shannon Adcock came up short in her run Tuesday night.

With all 26 precincts in Will and all 83 precincts in DuPage reporting, the Chicago Tribune reports Adcock finished behind incumbents Laurie Donahue with 6,015 votes and Susan Taylor-Demming with 5,912.

Rounding out the top four are Allison Fosdick, an Aurora University professor, with 5,229 votes, and Supna Jain, a professor at North Central College, with 5,119.

Adcock knew she faced an uphill battle from the start, at one point telling the DuPage Policy Journal she faced growing scorn and criticism for her stance objecting to some of the critical-race theory applications advanced by a teacher in the district.

“Being the mother of three and just a regular citizen, this has resulted in probably the most combative experience of my life,” she said. “They claim to be real inclusive and diverse, but as it turns out I think they are a very radical group and once I started to question them I got some heat.”

At one point, fellow candidate Asafonie Obed-Horton launched a Change.org petition against her demanding that she withdraw from the race over her suggestion that her rival and other parents open their own charter school if they wanted to see culturally responsive teaching in place.

In the final days of the campaign, Adcock openly wondered if all the distractions may have been part of a setup to keep her from attracting more of the support she needed.

“I got an email (from a woman) asking me about my stance on critical-race theory and I knew when I looked at her Facebook page she was in bed with this political diversity group and they’re in bed with the board and everybody is in bed with each other,” she said.
