Adcock: School board race 'most combative experience of my life'

Shannon Adcock says her Indian Prairie District 204 school board run has become miserable for the wrong reasons.

“Being the mother of three and just a regular citizen, this has resulted in probably the most combative experience of my life,” Adcock told the DuPage Policy Journal.

According to Adcock, all the fireworks began after she pointed out her objections to some critical-race theory applications advanced by a teacher in the district.

“They claim to be real inclusive and diverse, but as it turns out I think they are a very radical group and once I started to question them I got some heat.”

Adcock claims the online assaults included her essentially being branded a racist, and the launch of a Change.org petition demanding that she drop out of the race.

Fellow candidate Asafonie Obed-Horton, the parent who started the petition against Adcock, told the Chicago-Tribune she took great exception with her suggestion that she and other parents open their own charter school if they want to see culturally responsive teaching in place.

Meanwhile, Adcock is wondering if it all may have just been a set-up right from the start.

“I got an email (from a woman) asking me about my stance on critical-race theory and I knew when I looked at her Facebook page she was in bed with this political diversity group and they’re in bed with the board and everybody is in bed with each other.”

In a March 23 blog post to her campaign website, Adcock defended her position even more, asserting just because she doesn’t support culturally responsive teaching doesn’t mean she is racist.

“By advocating for school choice/reopen, I am advocating for all students, but especially minority and (English language learner) students,” she wrote.
