City of Naperville issued the following announcement on Dec. 29.

The City of Naperville is pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Groth as the City’s next Director of Public Utilities – Electric. Groth, who currently serves as the Electric Utility’s Deputy Director for Engineering and Operations, starts his new role on Thursday, Dec. 31.

“Brian Groth is a wonderful example of a subject-matter expert who has grown his career here with the City and is ready to take the next step into leadership,” City Manager Doug Krieger said. “His expertise with some of the most critical infrastructure improvements during the past 15 years positions him well to support our customers’ continuing power needs. I welcome Brian to his new role and look forward to his leadership of the Electric Utility.”

Groth joined the Naperville Electric Utility in 2006 as an Electrical Engineer in the Automation and Communication Section. He later held roles as Senior Electrical Engineer, and Manager of Automated Metering Infrastructure and Substation Engineering. Groth assisted with the Smart Grid project to facilitate wireless remote electric meter readings, led large substation infrastructure upgrades and recently has managed utility operations, planning and budgeting. Groth holds a Master of Science in Project Management from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Bradley University.

“I look forward to leading the Electric Utility into the future, building on the strong direction and management we’ve had in the past and using collaboration with other City departments to best serve our customers,” Groth said. “I plan to continue the Utility’s team-oriented approach, using innovation and technology to provide reliable electrical service while preserving stable rates.”

Groth is replacing Director Lucy Podlesny upon her retirement. Podlesny had stepped into the Electric Utility’s top role in 2019, succeeding longtime Director Mark Curran.
