Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) is elated to see state lawmakers finally take a different stance for their constituents in the ongoing battle against the coronavirus.

“From the beginning, lawmakers should have asked what triggers or data would indicate that business should be opened up again and children should be back at school,” Ives told the DuPage Policy Journal in reference to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order that has caused businesses all across the state to shutter.

Republican state Reps. Chris Miller (Oakland) and Brad Halbrook (Shelbyville) recently demanded action when they penned a letter to the governor calling on him to present a plan for reopening the government.

"Every day, we are learning more about the virus and we are seeing trends in certain parts of the country where the disease seems to be the most prevalent," the pair added in a statement. “What is needed is a plan for how to bring our economy back. The vast majority of the cases in Illinois appear to be in the Chicago region. The less-densely populated areas are simply not as affected as the more-densely populated regions of our state.”

Ives, now running against U.S. Rep. Sean Casten (R-Downers Grove) in the 6th District, agrees the only way forward is through transparency and with lawmakers being able to provide answers for their stressed-out constituents.

“They should ask their government leaders every day what it will take to get back working and what procedures for personnel protection should be requested,” she said.

Ives, who previously served six years as state representative in the 42nd District, recently announced she raised more than $500,000 in the first quarter for her campaign, her strongest to date.

Given the times, Ives said she feels her message of togetherness is particularly resonating with voters.

“Today, more than ever, people are turning away from politicians, like my opponent, who use government for personal gain, and looking for leaders who will truly represent them in Congress,” she said in a press release. “While the days and weeks ahead of us are somewhat uncertain, the campaign is strong. I remain focused on the future and look forward to delivering for the 6th District.”
