Glen Ellyn Park District issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.

Softball is one of the most popular and safest sports for girls, with nearly 10 million participants in the U.S. during the last year. Players benefit from the regular physical activity with improved fitness levels, increased confidence and self-esteem, and development of social and teamwork skills. The Glen Ellyn Park District’s Girls Softball program is run with the assistance of the Glen Ellyn Girls Softball Association and works to teach the girls softball skills while promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship.

“We’ve had a successful Girls Softball program for many years,” said Clint Babicz, Assistant Superintendent of Athletics for the Glen Ellyn Park District. “The softball rosters for both Glenbard West and Glenbard South High Schools are comprised of many players that have come through the Glen Ellyn Park District’s Girls Softball program.”

The objectives of the Girls Softball program include developing players’ skills with a focus on learning the fundamentals of the game. “Players also learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship, along with leadership skills,” added Babicz. “They develop respect for the rules, for the game, and for each other. The social aspect of the game helps players build solid relationships with their coaches and with other players.”

The program is for girls in Pre-K through grade 8, with the youngest girls starting out playing at the Pixie level (T-Ball). Leagues are recreational at the younger ages and become progressively more competitive in the leagues for older players. Girls playing in the 3rd grade league and up will participate in Playoff and All-Star games.

Teams are formed in mid-March and practices begin in April, with the season running through late June. Teams will typically play one weeknight and one Saturday game each week. Players will be provided with team shirts and protective equipment. Players must provide their own bat, glove and helmet.

Registration for Girls Softball ends on February 17, 2019. Beginning February 18th, registration will only be open if players are needed to complete teams. For more information, please contact Clint Babicz at cbabicz@gepark.org, or visit www.glenellynsoftball.com.
