Community Consolidated School District 89 recently issued the following announcement.
You can show that you bleed Chicago Bears orange and blue while also saving lives when you donate blood at Glen Crest Middle School on August 29. Anyone who gives blood between 2 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29, will receive a free Chicago Bears long-sleeve shirt.
Blood drive flier The blood drive will be in the cafeteria of the school at 725 Sheehan Avenue, Glen Ellyn. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are appreciated. The district’s goal is to collect 14 pints of blood. Heartland Blood Centers need at least 600 donors every day to meet the demands of hospitals.
Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation, and refreshments. The actual blood donation takes about 10 to 12 minutes. The entire process, from arrival to exit, takes about an hour.
The blood drive is open to anyone in the community. A photo ID is required to donate. It is recommended that a donor eat something within four hours prior to donation.
In order to donate, you need to be at least 17 years old and in good health. (Sixteen year olds can donate with parent permission.) You must weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated blood for at least eight weeks. To determine if you are eligible to donate, contact Heartland Blood Centers at (800) 786-4483.
With more local permanent blood centers closing, Glen Crest Middle School has become a regular host site for Heartland drives.
