The recent announcement that President Donald Trump had nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court drew praise from U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) as a step toward placing judicial focus on the U.S. Constitution.

“The responsibility of the Supreme Court of the United States to interpret the laws that govern every American is a substantial one, and the appointment of justices who have an understanding of the Constitution and a commitment to uphold the laws contained therein are a vital component of our legal system,” Roskam said in a statement.

Kavanaugh, an appeals judge on the D.C. Circuit, was nominated by the president to replace retiring Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, known as the court’s “swing vote,” according to NPR and The New York Times.

Roskam said the nomination of Kavanaugh, thought to be a strict constructionist who favors literal interpretations of the law, should be speedily confirmed.

“As Judge Kavanaugh once wrote, ‘The judge’s job is to interpret the law, not to make the law or policy’ and I believe that is the type of jurist Americans want on the Supreme Court,” Roskam said.
