City of Elmhurst Police Department issued the following announcement on July 2.
On July 2, 2018, at approximately 7:10 a.m. an Elmhurst Police patrol vehicle was involved in a collision with two bicyclists at the intersection of West Ave. and First St.
The Elmhurst police patrol vehicle was making a right turn from W/B First Street to N/B West Ave. and struck two 14-year-old female juvenile bicyclists as they traveled S/B West Ave. on the east sidewalk crossing First Street. An ambulance was called to the scene to evaluate both juveniles who were both were released to their parents at the scene.
At the time of the collision, the officer was on routine patrol duties and it has been confirmed that he was not communicating on his Mobile Data Terminal, or a cell phone.
Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth states, “We are thankful that the girls were not seriously injured and an internal investigation is currently underway.”
