U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) said on Tuesday that he has asked the U.S. Navy to name its next frigate the USS Quincy, in honor of the Illinois town.
“By naming a U.S. frigate after Quincy, Illinois, the Navy would be honoring the service and support the community gives on behalf of the Navy and Navy Reserve,” Kirk wrote in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of Quincy’s incorporation and the 190th anniversary of the inauguration of President John Quincy Adams, for whom the town was named. Quincy was home to a Navy Reserve Training Center from the late 1940s until it was destroyed in the 1973 floods.
"This honor by the U.S. Navy, should it be bestowed, would be especially significant now because Quincy is celebrating its 175th anniversary as a city in 2015, and the military has played an important role in our history going back to the Civil War,” Tom Oakley, former president and CEO of Quincy Newspapers, said.
