Westmont voters pass Stormwater-Infrastructure Sales Tax Referendum

Westmont

Voters in Westmont, Illinois, approved the Stormwater-Infrastructure Sales Tax Referendum on April 7.

The village will now plan the timeline for implementation.

“As with any sales tax change, we will need to reach out to the business community and provide clear communication regarding the change and which products this will affect,” Village Finance Director Spencer Parker said. “This process will take a few months to coordinate, promote and then implement the sales tax collection.”

Collection of the sales tax is likely to begin in 2015; physical work is expected to begin in 2016.

"This will be the first time that our community has had a dedicated revenue source to address stormwater issues," Village Planning Engineer Kim Nicoll said. "Our consulting firm had identified over $30 million worth of projects, so we want to be deliberate and thoughtful in our approach to help ensure that issues are addressed in an efficient and cost-effective manner.”

Mayor Ron Gunter attributed passage of the referendum to the efforts of residents.

"Again, I’d like to reiterate that this entire process was initiated by concerned residents who stepped forward to be part of the solution," he said. "I want to sincerely thank everyone who was involved in this process.”
