A sixteen-year-old male from Addison has been detained following accusations that he pointed a loaded firearm equipped with a high-capacity drum magazine and laser sight at a woman and her five children, according to an announcement by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Chief of Police Roy Selvik on Apr. 3. The juvenile, who is currently on probation for a 2024 criminal trespass to a motor vehicle, appeared before Judge Kishori Tank, who ordered him held until his next court date.

Authorities said the incident occurred late on April 1 when police responded to the 200 block of S. Yale Avenue after receiving a report about an individual with a gun. It is alleged that as the juvenile's car passed by the group in the driveway, he pointed the weapon at them while displaying gang signs and shouting “king love.” Officers later searched his residence with permission from his mother and found a loaded Taurus G3C handgun with an attached drum magazine and laser sight in his bedroom.

Berlin said, “There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a sixteen-year-old boy to be in possession of a loaded firearm, particularly a gun equipped with a high-capacity drum magazine and a laser sight. What I find particularly troubling is the fact that this juvenile was on juvenile probation at the time he allegedly possessed this weapon. I thank the Addison Police Department for their quick response to the initial call and for their efforts in identifying and apprehending the juvenile in this case which resulted in the removal of a dangerous, illegal weapon from our streets. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Angela Bazianos and Michael Pingaj for their work on this case and their continued efforts in keeping our communities safe.”

Selvik said, “We are grateful for the swift actions of officers in locating the offender and taking this weapon off the street. The thought of such a dangerous weapon remaining in the hands of a juvenile on probation is frightening. Thank you to State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his staff for their guidance and support.”

The accused faces multiple charges including unlawful possession of a firearm (Class 4 Felony), aggravated unlawful possession of weapons (Class 4 Felony), misdemeanor possession of ammunition without holding an Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID), as well as violation of an order of protection.

In DuPage County schools during 2022-23, there were about thirteen students per teacher among more than 142,000 students taught by over ten thousand full-time faculty members according to state education data. Teacher absenteeism was reported at just over thirty-eight percent during that year—higher than Illinois’ statewide average as reported by state records.

Of note within local schools: York Community High School had DuPage County's highest white student enrollment at nearly eighteen hundred fifty students; Metea Valley High School enrolled one hundred sixty-two multiracial students—the county's highest; Westmore Elementary School recorded ten Pacific Islander students; while Addison Trail High School had more than twelve hundred Hispanic students enrolled—all during academic year 2022-23 according to official figures.

The minor's next court appearance will be held April 10 before Judge Tank. Officials remind residents that these are only charges at this stage; all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
