Overnight detours scheduled at Arlington Heights Road and Illinois Route 53 interchanges on I-90
The Illinois Tollway announced on June 3 that overnight ramp closures and detours are planned throughout June at the Arlington Heights Road Interchange and Illinois Route 53 Interchange on the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90). The closures are part of ongoing work to upgrade toll plazas, which is expected to continue into 2027.
Electronic message signs and construction signage will be used in advance to alert drivers about the ramp closures and detours. Up-to-date information will be available in the Daily Construction Alert section of the Tollway website. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
According to the announcement, on Monday, June 8, the ramp from eastbound I-90 to southbound Illinois Route 53 will close at 8 p.m. for payment work, with a posted detour routing traffic through interchange ramps before exiting onto southbound Illinois Route 53. The ramp is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 9. In addition, another closure is planned for the ramp from eastbound I-90 to southbound Arlington Heights Road for tolling equipment installation; this closure will also run overnight from 8 p.m., reopening by 5 a.m. Detour information will be provided via signage and online alerts.
Extended lane reductions and traffic shifts remain in place at both interchanges as part of plaza improvements that include removal of canopies and barrier walls, installation of new monotube tolling infrastructure, pavement work, electrical upgrades, lighting enhancements, and improved signage. These efforts are being coordinated with local agencies including the Illinois Department of Transportation, Cook County authorities, area municipalities such as Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Village, as well as fire and police departments.
The improvements fall under Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future—a $15 billion capital program—and Bridging the Future—a seven-year $2 billion plan approved by directors in December 2024 aimed at continuing modernization initiatives based on stakeholder feedback. Motorists are reminded that construction zone speed limits apply around the clock in all affected areas; drivers should watch for changing patterns and use caution near workers. The "Move Over Law" requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles with hazard lights activated; penalties include fines up to $10,000 or jail time for violations involving roadway workers.
