Monroe School has launched a Crochet Club for students in grades 3 to 5, led by Teacher Librarian Meredith Wodka. The club was formed following student interest and meets weekly, offering an opportunity for both students and staff to learn and practice crochet techniques.

Ms. Wodka manages the club by providing members with yarn, hooks, and printed patterns suitable for beginners. The initiative is supported by Monroe staff who also participate, contributing to a collaborative environment.

The club encourages peer learning as experienced crocheters help newcomers develop their skills. While many start with simple projects like potholders, some students have advanced to making original pieces such as cardigans.

Superintendent Hector Garcia visited the club, participated in a lesson on making potholders, and experienced firsthand the engagement the activity brings to Monroe School.

Monroe Elementary School is part of Hinsdale Community Consolidated School District 181, which includes several other schools in DuPage and Cook counties. More details about the district can be found at https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/. The district employs 282 teachers with an average salary of $94,227; women make up 90 percent of this workforce according to data from the Illinois State Board of Education. The district's student body is primarily White (69.8 percent), with Asian (15.4 percent), Hispanic (6.8 percent), and Black (1.1 percent) representation. In 2020, spending per student was $31,308 for a total expenditure of $117 million.

"The club even received a high-profile visit when Superintendent Hector Garcia stopped by. He took a turn with the yarn and hook, receiving an introductory lesson on starting a potholder, highlighting the widespread appeal and success of this new creative outlet at Monroe School."
