The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has suspended federal child care and family assistance funding for California, Colorado, Minnesota, New York and Illinois because of concerns about fraud and misuse, the agency announced Jan. 6. The freeze puts a hold on nearly $2.4 billion in Child Care and Development Fund grants, $7.35 billion in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds and $869 million in Social Services Block Grants. States must submit additional documentation before payments resume.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called the federal move “wrong and cruel” and said Illinois is considering a challenge to the decision, highlighting the state’s existing anti‑fraud efforts.
According to state officials, the funding freeze could impact about 100,000 families and more than 152,000 children participating in Illinois’ Child Care Assistance Program, as well as financial support for thousands of licensed providers and 275 human service agencies.
