Illinois officials report 7,573 coronavirus deaths, with 186,471 confirmed cases
There have been 186,471 confirmed coronavirus cases in Illinois as of August 5, with 7,573 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Chicago (62,457 cases) and Cook County (45,968 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago's death toll from the virus stands at 2,798, while Cook County recorded 2,111 deaths, according to the IDPH.
Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 2,896,063, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was 20 to 29, with 34,473 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.
Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 87,474 were male and 95,684 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 4,085, while female deaths stood at 3,483.
Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 3,392 Asians, 3,392 whites, 2,067 African-Americans, 1,570 Hispanics, and 186 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
