Elmhurst counted 16 licensed child care providers in 2025, DCFS shows

According to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, there were 16 licensed child care providers operating in Elmhurst in 2025.

Among those, 13 operated as day care centers, representing 81.3%, while three functioned as group day care homes, comprising 18.8%.

In Elmhurst, these facilities serve a range of ages from infants through 12 years, including infants, toddlers, preschool-age and school-age children.

Multiple languages are supported by Elmhurst providers, with all 16 facilities offering services in English and one providing Ukrainian language care.

Statewide, Illinois recorded a total of 8,602 licensed child care facilities in 2025.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a freeze on select federal child care and family assistance grants for California, Colorado, Minnesota, New York and Illinois on Jan. 6 due to concerns over fraud and misuse. The freeze covers nearly $2.4 billion from the Child Care and Development Fund, $7.35 billion from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families grants and $869 million through Social Services Block Grants, requiring proof from the states before releasing additional funds. 

Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois criticized the move as “wrong and cruel” and said the state could challenge the decision, asserting that existing anti-fraud measures are in place in Illinois. 

State officials reported that the freeze could have an impact on about 100,000 families and more than 152,000 children who rely on the Child Care Assistance Program, along with funding for thousands of licensed child care providers and 275 human service organizations.
