Aurora supported 92 licensed child care sites in 2025

Data from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services indicates Aurora maintained 92 licensed child care facilities in 2025.

Among these, 35 were operated as day care centers (38%), 43 as group day care homes (46.7%) and 14 as family child care homes (15.2%).

Care providers in Aurora accommodate children from infancy through age 12, serving infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children.

The city’s child care agencies deliver services in several languages, including English at 92 locations and Spanish at 12.

Across Illinois, there were 8,602 licensed child care facilities in 2025.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services froze certain federal child care and family assistance funds for California, Colorado, Minnesota, New York and Illinois, citing fraud and misuse concerns in an announcement Jan. 6. Nearly $2.4 billion in Child Care and Development Fund grants, $7.35 billion in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds and $869 million in Social Services Block Grants are affected, with states required to submit documentation prior to payment release.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker criticized the decision as “wrong and cruel” and said Illinois may contest the freeze, affirming that the state has anti-fraud measures in operation.

According to state officials, the funding freeze could impact approximately 100,000 families and upward of 152,000 children benefiting from the state’s Child Care Assistance Program, in addition to thousands of licensed child care providers and 275 human services organizations.
