Amy Grant criticizes governor’s proposed budget increase as unsustainable
State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) has responded to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year, which was presented to a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly on February 18.
Grant, who is serving her final term in office, highlighted the significant growth in state spending since she began her tenure. “When I first came to Springfield in 2019, the state budget was about $38.5 billion. As I prepare to place my final budget vote before retiring, the FY2027 Budget request has grown to roughly $56.032 billion. That is almost a 50% increase in just over seven years,” said Rep. Grant.
She also noted that population growth during this period has been minimal: “During that same time, Illinois’ population has barely changed — growing by about 0.4%, from approximately 12.67 million to 12.72 million residents. Most of that modest growth is due to recent international migration, offsetting the many Illinois families who have chosen to leave our state because they could no longer afford it.”
Grant expressed concern about increased spending without corresponding population growth or relief for taxpayers: “You cannot justify a 50% increase in spending when our population is essentially flat and working families are struggling with higher costs of living. Illinois taxpayers deserve a responsible, balanced budget that prioritizes core services, while reducing spending.”
She added: “I remain committed to using my last year in the State House to advocate for a sustainable budget that protects taxpayers, reverse the damage done by bad public policy to our economy.”
Grant was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 47th House District in 2023, succeeding Deanne Mazzochi. The district includes several communities within DuPage County such as Naperville, Warrenville, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lisle, Carol Stream, Bartlett, West Chicago, Winfield and Wayne.
