Will County officials report 257 coronavirus deaths, with 5,117 confirmed cases

There have been 5,117 confirmed coronavirus cases in Will County as of May 24, with 257 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Chicago (42,372 cases) and Cook County (29,638 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago's death toll from the virus stands at 1,940, while Cook County recorded 1,364 deaths, according to the IDPH.

Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 747,921, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was 40 to 49, with 19,922 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.

Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 52,380 were male and 55,561 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 2,696, while female deaths stood at 2,153.

Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 2,070 Hispanics, 236 Asians, 2,070 whites, 1,469 African-Americans, and 158 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
