Wheaton Planning and Zoning Board schedules public hearing on religious facility expansion
The Wheaton Planning and Zoning Board announced on May 6 that it will hold a public hearing regarding a zoning application for the Islamic Center of Wheaton. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Wheaton City Hall, located at 303 West Wesley Street. Attendance will be available both in person and via Zoom.
The purpose of the hearing is to consider an amendment to a special use permit for a building devoted to religious worship. The proposed changes include renovation of the existing building and construction of an addition totaling 34,000 square feet across basement, first floor, and second floor spaces. The project also involves reconfiguring parking areas with a net increase of three parking stalls at the property commonly known as 900 E. Geneva Road.
The application was submitted by the property owner, The Islamic Center of Wheaton. According to details provided by the board, the subject property is legally described as Lot 1 (except the west 957.5 feet) in Gauger’s Assessment Plat No. 2 in DuPage County.
Community members who wish to make public statements are encouraged to do so during the hearing or may submit written comments before or at the event. A copy of the application can be reviewed at the office of the Director of Planning and Economic Development during regular business hours.
Nicole Aranas, Chair of the Wheaton Planning and Zoning Board, said these proceedings are part of standard procedures for considering amendments related to special use permits.
