Carroll University has appointed Ericka Hess as the new head coach for their softball team, the Pioneers. She becomes the fifth person to hold this position in the 21st century, succeeding the program's longest-serving and most successful coach who retired at the end of the 2025 season.
"We're thrilled about the hire of Coach Hess. She's a passionate coach who has a strong foundation of the game," stated Carroll Athletic Director Michael Schulist. "I look forward to working with Coach Hess to develop a strong and successful Carroll softball program both on and off the field."
Hess joins Carroll from Hillsdale College in Michigan, where she spent three years as an assistant coach. Her responsibilities included managing team logistics such as travel, lodging, and meals, ensuring smooth operations at NCAA Division-II level competitions. She also focused on outfield and slapper development during practice sessions and contributed to player growth and team performance. Additionally, she organized youth camps and recruiting events while promoting Hillsdale's program nationwide.
"I'm honored to lead the Carroll University softball program, and grateful to Athletic Director Mike Schulist and the entire Pioneer community for this opportunity," said Hess. "We will compete with purpose, passion, and discipline, driven by hard work." She emphasized her mission to nurture confident young women who excel both on the field and in their communities.
Before her role at Hillsdale, Hess was head varsity coach at Iroquois High School in Erie, Pennsylvania for three years. In her first head coaching position there, she provided personalized instruction focusing on hitting, fielding, conditioning across various skill levels using advanced technology for swing analysis.
Hess graduated from Geneva College in 2019 with degrees in Psychology and Human Services. As a member of Geneva's Golden Tornadoes' softball team for four years, she maintained a batting average of .271 over 106 games. Her involvement extended beyond playing; she served as Vice President of SAAC during her time there.
Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Hess also worked as a ball girl for Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates between 2018-2021.
