Riana Hayes, a multi-sport student-athlete at North Park University in Chicago, has made significant strides in both volleyball and track & field. Originally from Wheeling, Illinois, Hayes is recognized as a Division III Indoor All-American in the 200 meters. This weekend, she will compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Geneva, Ohio as part of North Park University's 4x100 meter relay team.

In addition to her track accomplishments, Hayes has been instrumental in the success of North Park's women's volleyball team. She contributed to the Vikings' first-ever CCIW regular-season championship in 2023 and consecutive CCIW Tournament titles in 2022 and 2023.

Reflecting on her journey, Hayes shared that she faced initial doubts about being a student-athlete in college but was encouraged by her coaches and sister to pursue sports. Choosing North Park allowed her to engage with both volleyball and track & field while studying elementary education.

"I ended up getting in contact with Coach Bisrat Kidane," Hayes said. "I remember thinking to myself... do I want to go to this one school where I could only play one sport, or do I want to go to this school?"

Hayes also recounted personal challenges during her time at North Park. The loss of her aunt during her freshman year was particularly difficult. However, support from teammates and coaches helped her cope.

"Although I was going through something so hard... I had a second family to look to as a freshman," Hayes said.

Her determination led to impressive achievements on the track. She earned all-conference status at the CCIW Indoor Championship and achieved All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championship by placing 11th in the 200 meters.

"The biggest question – what more can you do? – is really what pushes you," she noted regarding her motivation.

Beyond athletics, Hayes balances academic responsibilities as an elementary education major while gaining experience through clinical hours. Her future aspirations include becoming a third-grade teacher and continuing her track career beyond college.

Hayes's story highlights perseverance supported by community strength. As she continues making an impact at North Park University, she remains thankful for the opportunities shaping her growth as both an athlete and individual.
