State Representative Amy Grant of Wheaton has reiterated her opposition to a proposed bill that would legalize assisted suicide in Illinois. Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Grant expressed her concerns about the potential impact of such legislation on vulnerable groups.
“I’m pro-life — that includes the unborn, the elderly, the disabled, and anyone who feels alone or hopeless,” said Grant. “Life is precious, and we should never treat it as disposable.”
Grant emphasized that the bill could lead to abuse and send a negative message regarding human life's value. She mentioned worries from disability advocates, including Misericordia, about the possible disproportionate effects on individuals with developmental disabilities.
“Our medical professionals should be focused on providing hope and healing — not a prescription for death,” Grant stated. “We should be lifting people up, not glamorizing suicide.”
Despite her efforts to rally opposition, the legislation passed in the Illinois House of Representatives with a vote count of 63-42-2.
